Marcos Fava Neves: We run the risk of a new climate adversity

The climate has made it difficult for rural producers to profit, who record losses in plantations, mainly due to climate issues. THE CNN Specialist in agribusiness Marcos Fava Neves commented, this Friday (4), about the outlook for this year.

For Marcos, the big question is whether the 2021/22 crop will deliver the same export value as the 2020/21 crop.

“We started excited in September and October of last year, because the planting area was record, and there was a forecast for favorable weather”, he said.

However, the beginning of this year presented a very dry climate in Rio Grande do Sul, Paraná and Mato Grosso, which harmed soybeans. People who were expecting to harvest 60 bags per hectare are harvesting eight.

Losing 25 million tons of soy because of the weather is equivalent to half Argentina. We ended the first half with a problem

In the Midwest region, the opposite occurred. Excessive rain and few days of sunshine made it difficult for the crops to take root and grow.

Marcos explained that the expectation was to have 300 million tons of grains in Brazil, but that now the sector expects around 130.

“Last year, the drought came in the second half. We lost sugarcane, corn, coffee and oranges. We still run the risk of a new climate adversity coming”, said the expert.

If the weather improves in the second harvest, however, there is a chance that the number of exports will equal or exceed last year, because of the increase in prices.
