Queen Margaret of Denmark will not be spending Christmas with her children and grandchildren this year. They will be there instead Princess Benedict, sister of the monarch, and some of her friends to accompany her to Marselisborg Castle, the residence where the Danish royal family usually meets every December 25th. According to a statement from the Danish royal family, the Crown Prince Frederick and her family will spend the Christmas holidays in Australia, the country of origin of Princess Mary. The prince Joachimthe second of the Queen’s children, will make “a trip abroad” with his wife and children.
The press release from the Royal House takes the opportunity to apologize to the queen’s two sonssurprised to be left alone in what was one of the most special years of her reign: the monarch celebrated her Golden Jubilee in 2022. On the one hand, the press release recalls that «five years have passed since the last visit of the Crown Prince, his wife and their four children to the princess’s homeland», while clarifying that the trip of Prince Joachim and his family «had been planned for some time».
With this last nuance, the intention seems to be to avoid that the holidays of the princes Joachim and Marie of Denmark with their children are seen as a sign of estrangement between this branch of the Danish royal family and Margaret II, since the Queen surprised everyone last September by announcing her decision to withdraw the princely titles from Joachim’s four children.
The Danish monarch claimed that was her intention allow grandchildren who have no expectations of a throne to create a “life of their own”, free from the obligations that derive from belonging to the royal house. However, Prince Joachim and Princess Marie did not see it the same way and reacted badly to the decision, communicating their sadness and surprise to the press. Although Margaret II has apologized for the pain caused, she has not rectified her controversial decision, which will take effect on January 1, 2023.
