Margherita and her homogenitorial family: “We are happy and imperfect like everyone else”

“Try looking into a drop. What do you see? All the drops are different from each other and through each of them you see something different. And in fact one day, two young girlfriends, Mary and Francy, decided to see in a drop a future considered impossible for them: a family “: with this incipit, Margherita Fiengo Pardi starts the story of his existence contained in the short film Ask me if ….

Nineteen years old, daughter of Maria Silvia Fiengo and Francesca Pardi, founders of the publishing house The block letters as well as among the first activists of the association Rainbow familiesMarried in Barcelona, Margherita was conceived, after years of trying, with artificial insemination in a Dutch clinic.

The Italian State still does not fully recognize i rights of children of same-parent families like her and her three siblings born later. Meanwhile, the homophobia of some politicians and part of the people leads to statements such as “the children of gays would like a father and a mother” or even “better to be born under bombs or in Africa than to be the son of gays”.

“Unfortunately, people who should lead by example only show ignorance, they talk about subjects they don’t know. I grew up amidst the echo of rumors and articles that spoke of my condition as a daughter of two mothers, never asking my opinion»Says Margherita, tracing the roots of her short film in this lack of respect and consideration for the feelings and desires of the children of rainbow families.

When she reached the age of majority, prompted by a task assigned to her in class, at the art school she attended in Milan, she felt the need to give an answer, in the first person, to the absurd theories on “Children against nature”.

Who better than me can explain what it means to have parents of the same, he thought. And in 18 minutes of video she encapsulated her extraordinarily ordinary family story. Undeniably, the substantial archive material helped her: “as a child, I always wandered around the house with a camera in my hand”, she recalls, “at the age of 4, as a Christmas present, instead of a doll, I asked for a camera. When I was 11 I started making my first well-edited videos ».

Margherita’s is a real passion, which she hopes to turn into a job by continuing her studies at a film school. For the moment one thing is certain: her artistic expression has allowed her to outline her everyday life, far from the criticisms and severe judgments even of law that does not recognize her as the daughter of two mothers but adopted.

«By the law, up to my 16 years, until the mayor of Milan, Beppe Sala, asked me the consent to be recognized as a daughter also of Francesca Pardi, I had no parental connection with her and my non-biological brother, we were just people who lived under the same roof. So much so that the teachers could get me out of school with my mother Francesca only after delegation »she still incredulously tells of the unexpected success recorded by her short film which, silently, went viral from the school desks.

Made about a month ago and delivered directly to the professor who had assigned the task, in addition to his super excited mothers, still no one else had seen. Ask me if …the video that earned her a ten on the register, but above all an opportunity to assert her rights.

«In these days», he explains, «I will show the short film to the principal because they have decided to propose it for artistic competitions. In the meantime, I am participating in a call for filmmakers that would allow me to improve its quality and make it even more professional, my dream in short. And requests are already arriving to project it in other schools to raise awareness among the youngest ».
