In the seven years that have passed since Minimal Musical, his first album, Margaret Vicar he had the opportunity to discover himself and to test himself, to try and make mistakes, to fall and get up again. From participation as an actress in films such as The Universal and in TV series like Half black, Vicario never lost sight of music, his first love, to the point of (finally) giving his loyal audience a beautiful and nuanced album like Bingo, to be released on May 14, 14 tracks that took two years of work and that, in between, also faced a global pandemic.
“From a certain point of view, this situation has brought about new material to write about” explains Margherita in connection with Zoom, a burgundy shirt and soft hair that falls gently on her shoulder. “I was born as a guitar and voice singer-songwriter, but here I was able to find a new form” she continues, citing many of the artists with whom she collaborated, from Speranza and Elodie, and dedicating a special mention to Davide «Dade» Pavarello, “The father” of this record which owes its name to a simple case of fate.
“I was trying to sort out the stuff I had and I created a folder just calling it ‘bingo’. I carried this title for two years, and then I managed to justify it: bingo is a place where people meet, but it is also the keeper of a tragic and disastrous side like gambling addiction, and a more fun side linked to adrenaline. All these things together, in a certain way, mirror my writing ». A free but at the same time controlled writing, which addresses macro-themes such as the assertion of the role of women in today’s society, the interference of the Church in our lives and the obsession with profit in a world with a strong capitalist imprint in a light way, tearing a smile, tearing the veil of many things that, even today, are struggling to be said. Like a woman’s freedom to talk openly about sexuality with her man that Margherita sings in Giubottino, one of the best songs on the album: «Of these things it is more tiring to speak in prose than in verse. In Giubottino I speak first to myself, I wonder what went wrong in my most intimate experiences and I tell myself to do better. Something that, implicitly, I also suggest to the others to do ». Asking her how her way of writing and approaching the world has changed in recent years makes her laugh out loud: «Everything changed from there. In my twenties, I wrote about my personal tribulations, about love stories, about boyfriends. Now, however, I have managed to talk about things that concern me closely, but which are aimed at the outside world, addressing issues that seem more social and political on the surface but which, in the end, always start from the things I have experienced ».
In terms of labels, whether it is “feminism” (“It’s a cumbersome word, full of gray areas”) or “versatility” (“Being multifaceted or eclectic is fine as long as it is not associated with the fact that you can do things well “), Margherita Vicario feels she wants to break a lance in favor of nuance and, above all, of contamination. “The fact that he studied theater and that he comes from a very specific starting point is something I like. I can, however, with great difficulty in giving myself a label, it will be because I have always written all my songs by myself ». Songs published, but also unpublished, that perhaps we will never listen (“In recent years I have a small treasure of songs that I keep under my pillow and that are still there: it is not their time yet”). Songs that are not only part of his, but also of our lives. Lives that have to do with an idea of morality inherited from the Church – the fact that the song Too many priests too many nuns count on the contribution of the Battipaglia Children’s Choir, children who are always associated with “innocence”, it is not accidental – and with a pandemic that has damaged many sectors, including entertainment. “Together with the assets, which we do not exploit as we should, we must also think about the living culture, which makes our country what it is. I see it quite tragic, even if I am relatively touched: I don’t do stadiums and arenas, even if one day I aspire to do them. Right now, I’m very lucky because I have the ideal capacity “jokes Margherita who, in the meantime, is preparing to return with a series that she has just finished shooting and that we will see soon on Raiuno and with two live projects: a tour to promote Bingo and another, created together with the Multiethnic Orchestra of Arezzo, with a vast repertoire that will see both his songs and those of the Orchestra.
“Before, my music was very cerebral. Today I want to make more fun music trying to keep my pen. To say that I like Beyoncé, an artist who has always had great aesthetic care as well as for entertainment, seems to me even banal ». In How are you, another beautiful song by Bingo, Vicario talks about how she would like to show herself to the world, between hastily put on makeup and the need to be at peace with herself. We ask you the same question today: “Even if I have my moments of deep sadness and bad mood, I always tend to show others the more positive side. Underneath I am a sad girl a little pissed off about everything I see on the news, and a little indignant. This is why I tend to charge myself to see the positive things. To say, if you are rich and famous and then you are alone like a dog, I would say that it did not go very well for you ».
