Maria Corina Machado: banning candidacy is not a sentence, it is judicial delinquency

Opponent María Corina Machado, favorite candidate to contest the presidential elections scheduled for this year in Venezuela against Nicolás Maduro, said this Monday (29), that the ban on her candidacy, ratified by the country's Supreme Court of Justice, is not a sentence , but rather “judicial delinquency”.

Victorious in the opposition primaries, Machado was banned, in 2021, from holding public office in the country for 15 years. Despite the decision, she stated that she will become president electorally in 2024, and stated that Maduro and her circle are willing to do whatever it takes to prevent her from running.

“We are going to defeat Maduro and they know it,” he said, arguing that the authorities “issued a decision that cannot be called a sentence, it is not even an arbitrary decision, this is called judicial delinquency. That's what happened. It is necessary to call things by their name”, said Machado in his first public act after the Judiciary’s decision.

According to Machado “from time to time [o governo] invents plots to persecute innocent people.” But he assured: “Nicolás Maduro will not decide who the people's candidate is because the people have already chosen who their candidate is.

In the document that ratifies the decision, the Venezuelan TSJ states that she “was a participant in the corruption plot orchestrated by the usurper Juan Guaidó”, in reference to the opponent who proclaimed himself president of the country in 2019, when he led the country's Legislature.

According to the text, the “plot” led to the blockade of the country's resources, and the delivery of Venezuelan companies and wealth abroad, such as the oil company Citgo, in addition to the request for sanctions to be applied to the country.

Corina said Maduro is violating the Barbados Accords, which set out steps to establish guarantees for a democratic and transparent electoral process in Venezuela.
