The first time she felt different Maria Sole Giardini was 14 years old. Like all her friends she was ready to “become a woman”, as mothers and grandmothers often said a few years ago. It meant experiencing the first menstrual cycle, the first tampon, that first feeling of embarrassment mixed with curiosity. All things that Maria Sole has never experienced.
“Is called sindrome di Mayer Rokitansky Kuster Hauser, which means being born without a uterus but also being technically fertile », says Maria Sole, who is now 37, married and dreams of becoming a mother with her husband Sergio.
Six thousand other women in Italy live with the same syndrome. “However, I cannot have children except through gestation in solidarity for others, because I do not have the cradle in my body in which to allow an embryo to nest and grow”.
In Italy, gestation for others is not allowed in any way, solidarity or commercial. This is why when Maria Sole began her battle, in 2017 she found her by her side the Luca Coscioni association for scientific freedom, the only one today to have drawn up, together with other associations, a legislative proposal for the regulation of solidarity pregnancy for others, “making it available to Parliament so that it is filed and any form of possible illegality is avoided for the protection of all those involved”, he explains Filomena Gallo, lawyer and secretary of the Coscioni association. “In the meantime, we continue to take the legal path to ensure that, in the absence of a law, gestation for others altruistic and solidarity is authorized in our country, case by case”.
And that’s what Maria Sole and Sergio are about to do: go before a judge. “We just want to give a life. Some time ago with the Coscioni association we launched an appeal to find a woman who voluntarily wanted to carry on the pregnancy for us here in Italy. We found it and now we hope to get the green light from the judge. “
A battle for rights that Maria Sole also carries on for the thousands of other women who live in the same situation as her. «We choose gestation for others because, if done without exploitation and constraints, it is a medical technique and a possibility that should be allowed. We choose surrogacy because it is the only way our child will be able to come into the world ». To help Maria Sole, you can sign her appeal here for Parliament to issue a gestation law for others (GPA).
