Tonight, Wednesday 10 March at 6.45 pm, Marianna De Micheli will be live on the Ig profile of Vanity Fair Italia to talk about sailing and courage
She is an actress, but also a sailor, but also a videomaker. Marianna De Micheli can teach you a lot about the ability to reinvent yourself, about the courage to give up everything and about throwing yourself into an adventure that might seem extreme: turning the Mediterranean on a nine-meter sailboat with the sole company of her cat Jingjok (gecko). in Thai).
Marianna, let’s start from the beginning, she was an actress (in One hundred windows played the character of Carol Grimani)?
“I’m an actress it’s just that now the productions are stopped, the theaters are closed and I’ve reinvented myself”.
Why sailing, a passion that has always been? “
“Absolutely not, I discovered her as an adult. I was in Thailand, a country that I love and whose language and traditions I have also studied. It was the end of December 2004 and I was on a small island on the border with Malaysia when the tsunami hit. Fortunately, there were no deaths or injuries here, but all around was devastation. I called my parents and they told me: “Stay there until the situation calms down.” I spent two months barefoot on the beach. We were a very small group of tourists and we lived with the fishermen. In those two months I saw the globetrotting sailors passing by anchoring in the protected bay of our islet. We made friends with a Frenchman who was traveling with two small children, one six years old and one just born. And with him I discovered the enormous pleasure of sailing ».
So she came back and took to the sea?
«I wanted to do a sailing school, but I thought it was just a thing for the rich, a deeply rooted preconception. So I let it go. Only when I started acting in CentoVetrine I gave myself the sailing course and bought a 9-meter boat with which I still sail. I baptized it Maipenrai, a Thai word that could be translated as never mind».
What happened then?
“Then in 2015 CentoVetrine it’s over, my boyfriend dumped me and I went into a deep crisis. I had a very strong anguish. I thought: I’ll be alone all my life. Until I decided: I give up everything and avoided in the boat alone because the solitude seen from the sea will help me. I rented my house, took my cat and very few other things and did my first solo tour of Italy. I was terrified. It was a very difficult journey, especially an internal one. But now I am no longer afraid of loneliness ».
Where is the courage for such a strong choice?
“Courage is only psychological. I am a coward. I’ve always been afraid. It is the idea of being able to do it. It is the idea of jumping off the diving board. The thought: now I jump not knowing if there is water underneath or not. Then once you break away it’s no longer a question of courage, somehow you get along. Courage lies in making the decision ».
What happened after?
“After months of solo sailing, I returned home, found another boyfriend and wrote a book Centoboline. The logbook of an actress who went from set to solo sailing».
But then did she go back to sea again?
«In 2020 when the pandemic started, I realized that I couldn’t do it on land and I decided to go through the whole lockdown on a cat boat. My fiancé preferred to stay at home because it is more nightstand. Then came the summer but I continued to be on the boat and so I started making videos on Youtube about sailing and sea. I act myself. I am a director, editor, actress, everything. All this in collaboration with Assonautica which provides me with the mooring points. I went from an actress to a videomaker actress. I tell the coast from the point of view of the sea. I promote small boating. I would like to bring people closer to this wonderful world ».
What does the sail give you?
“Sailing has given me a lot. I am dyslexic, dyscalculic and whoever has more, the more. Sailing has helped me more than any other sport, it’s like an epitome of 20 years of psychoanalysis. It made me find self-confidence, security, courage and I think mine is an important example, especially for a woman ».
What do you mean?
«A girl who sees a woman who goes around alone on the sea in winter with a sailboat understands that it is possible, that she could do it too. And so we get out of this grip of fear a little, from this cliché that certain things women can’t do to them. Without engaging in feminist rhetoric, I like the idea of being able to bring the female world a little closer to a sport that pushes towards independence and autonomy. I like to make women think that they can do it, that they can jump into it. Besides, sailing for me is not a sport, it is a lifestyle. A life that favors contact with nature and learning to do less than superfluous “
What will he do now?
«I will circumnavigate Italy again. From Loano, where I am now, I will go to Ventimiglia and then I will leave to do the whole tour of the country. I will post one video a week, every Sunday at 5pm on my Youtube channel. It is an ambitious project and will last at least two years. I hope to bring people, even in such a dark moment, a breath of freedom and joy ».
And the boyfriend?
«He will join me this summer with the motorbike, presumably in Sardinia. And we will do the same road he by land and I by sea, meeting in the evening in the port. Romantic isn’t it? “
