Marianna: “My (new) life with a bone marrow stimulator against chronic pain”

«My name is Marianna, I am 36 years old and I live in Magenta, in the western province of Milan. I am writing this letter because I would like to let everyone know my experience of illness and at the same time of partial rebirth.
My story began in 2019, when I began to have more and more frequent pains in my back and leg. I thought it was because, working in a restaurant, I was on my feet for many hours and although I went punctually to the ER in search of help, I was from time to time sent home with bites, cortisone, ultimately even morphine, to remedy the pains.

The day I was so sick I passed out from the pain I was hospitalized and here, through an MRI, it was found that I had a tumor: schwannoma, also called neurinoma, a benign tumor originating from the Schwann cells of the cranial and spinal nerves. At the spinal level, the neuroma grows inside the dura mater and is one of the most frequent extra-medullary tumors.
I underwent an operation which lasted 7 hours, after which they told me that it was not sure if I would resume using my legs. The right, in fact, was practically “dead”. I was transferred to the Gaetano Pini rehabilitation center, where I remained in a wheelchair for three months.
However, my right leg was affected to the point that it still caused me burning and pains even with just touching it. I left the hospital in June 2019 walking with a crutch, thinking of improving and being able to remove it permanently, but unfortunately I still can’t do without it today.

A few months later I went to pain therapy specialists e I was offered to wear a bone marrow electrostimulator, the ultimate pain management solution.
In July 2020 I put on the provisional and in August, after a month, I wore the definitive device. Well, the pain has decreased by 50%, it has helped me a lot even if I can’t be as I was before
The procedure involves the insertion, through a special needle, of an electrode (a wire) into the epidural space, which is connected to a generator under the skin. The generator produces low-voltage electrical signals that are transmitted from the electrode to the spinal cord. Practically, the electrostimulator “tricks” the brain by preventing it from receiving the sensation of pain. I have a remote control through which I can increase or decrease the intensity of the shocks or even turn it off in case it has to make resonance or other visits. Without this device I don’t know what I would have done!

There are many of us who are “bionic” and we keep in touch through social networks. There are groups dedicated to those suffering from chronic pain where I met many girls and where we meet daily to compare and tell us how we are. Those who suffer from chronic pain do not give up, because pain therapies can help us thanks to these new techniques, and even if the surgery is painful it is really worth it ».
