The second day of the trial of former military police officers Ronnie Lessa and Élcio de Queiroz is being held this Thursday (31). They are accused of having killed Rio de Janeiro councilor Marielle Franco (PSOL) and driver Anderson Gomes. The crime occurred in March 2014.

The session began at around 9:30 am and the sentence is expected to be handed down this Thursday.

Marielle’s sister, the Minister of Racial Equality, Anielle Franco, was present at the trial. Former federal deputy Marcelo Freixo also stopped by. On Wednesday (30), during the first day of the trial, defendant Ronnie Lessa stated that he had received a cash offer to kill the then parliamentarian, who, at the time, was from PSOL.

Throughout today, prosecutor Eduardo Martins displayed on the big screen the research that was carried out by Lessa on the internet in the months leading up to the crime. Among them were the terms “death to PSOL”, “death of Marcelo Freixo” and “Marcelo Freixo hanged”. The information was obtained after the defendant’s telematic confidentiality was broken.

The prosecutor also exposed images of the crime scene. The photos show the bullet holes in the side of the car where Marielle, Anderson and advisor Fernanda Chaves were – who survived. According to Martins, at least 14 shots were fired.

For the prosecutor, the number and direction of the shots refute Ronnie Lessa’s defense thesis that the driver was not the group’s target.

In Martins’ view, by killing all the occupants of the car, Lessa intended to burn the archives. “If I leave the driver alive, he can write down my license plate, he can tell which way the car turned, he can call 911 and say: ‘run after that license plate, the person who just shot the gun’.”
