In an interview with CNN, the creator of Blognejo, Marcus Bernardes, known as “Marcão” stated that since the beginning of Marília Mendonça’s career, when she was still preparing to be released as a singer, she already knew that she wanted to reach a vast and diverse audience.
“She was aware that she wanted to speak a popular language, talk about everyday issues of the people in a way that the people could identify with. She knew who to talk to and how to talk. She was the queen of the populace, the ‘queen of suffering’ and of the peripheries.”
One of his strategies was to carry out a tour of free concerts throughout Brazil, taking his music to those who would have difficulty accessing it. “The ‘Todos os Cantos’ project was a way to show how much her work reached everyone. And the fact that they were free concerts, where she pamphleted to the people on the street, was a way of showing that her audience was not class A and B. She was aware of wanting to talk to low-income audiences and not he is able to always be at the show with an expensive ticket”, he explains.
For him, unlike most backcountry artists “who see the backcountry as entertainment or just to be sold”, she sought to exceed these standards. “Her songs were actually very well written and very well thought out. She saw country music as art”, she says.
Marcão believes that she would become the great queen of the sertanejo in Brazil, surpassing Roberta Miranda. He also emphasizes that his repertoire was noticed in many other musical styles.
“Gal Costa invited Marília to record with her and made a point of recording a song by Marília on that occasion. Caetano praised and there is a recent song of his that mentions Marília twice in the lyrics because he already saw Marília as this phenomenon. Racionais MC posted in honor of Marília on the networks and she has always had a strong bond with hip hop. She liked to listen. The pagode, then, not even mentioned, has already recorded with countless artists. She was always walking through the most diverse genres.”
The blogger says that when Marília sent the guiding voice of her recent compositions to renowned artists to record, her interpretation was already highly praised. “Duals from all over Brazil, singers and singers from all over Brazil recorded her compositions and this was what opened the eyes of the people who worked with her and who already had a bond, to launch her as an artist, as a performer.”
Marcão explains that his first successful song, “Minha Herança”, was written at the age of 12 and recorded by João Neto & Frederico, and since then, it has already been prepared to be released as a solo artist. One of its premises when it became a national phenomenon was to bring together everyone who believed in it from the beginning.
“So much so that she had the same friendships until today, until today she kept [um laço] with Henrique and Juliano and with Maiara and Maraísa, it was always a question for her to maintain the recognition of those who helped her in the beginning. This always caught my attention.”
