Marília Mendonça receives honor at the Grammy Awards

Brazilian singer Marília Mendonça, who died in a plane crash in 2021, was honored during the Grammy award ceremony, which took place this Sunday (3). The award is considered the most important in the music market.

During the annual event, there is traditionally a moment of reverence for the deceased from the previous year of relevance in world music. The name and image of the country singer appeared on a large screen during the session called “In Memoriam”. As a video streamed showing the honorees, singers Ben Platt, Cynthia Erivo, Leslie Odom Jr. and Rachel Zegler introduced themselves.

Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins, who died in March, and songwriter Stephen Sondheim, received special tributes. Rolling Stones drummer Charlie Watts, who died in 2021, was also remembered.

One absence was noticed by the Brazilian public: singer Elza Soares, national music icon, who died in January, was not mentioned during “In Memoriam”. The lack was criticized on social media.
