Marilyn Monroe’s dress may have been damaged after Kim Kardashian wore it

Socialite and businesswoman Kim Kardashian surprised her by appearing in one of Marilyn Monroe’s most iconic dresses at this year’s Met Gala, hosted by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

The dress was worn when the actress sang “Happy Birthday” to then US President John F. Kennedy in 1962.

An Instagram profile that gathers relics of Monroe published a photo with a comparison between the dress before the use of Kardashian, and the alleged result of the recent appearance. In the new image, some areas around the back zipper appear torn and frayed, and the lack of some of the crystals that make up the piece is notable.

The appearance of the dress had already caused controversy in May, when Kim Kardashian paraded the outfit. She spent 15 minutes in the original piece, then wore a replica for the remainder of the dance.

The historic item was purchased for $5 million in 2016 by Ripley’s Believe It Or Not! in Hollywood. According to the institution, the dress is currently worth approximately $10 million, after Kardashian’s appearance.

On social media, some netizens argue that the piece should not have been used, in order to risk the preservation of the item. For others, updating an iconic piece is part of the trend.

According to museum representatives, Ripley’s experts were present throughout the entire process, and Kim Kardashian’s team didn’t spend any time in the dress unattended.
