Defendant José Maria da Costa Júnior, accused of running over and killing cyclist Marina Harkot in 2020 for driving under the influence of alcohol, will go before a popular jury next Thursday (23), at the Barra Funda Forum, in São Paulo.
Initially scheduled for June 2024, the trial was postponed after the defendant’s defense presented a medical certificate confirming dengue fever. However, the defendant’s medical records show negative tests for the disease.
The MP requested the initiation of a crime investigation procedure by the doctor responsible for the certificate.
New Manifestation
Family and friends of the victim will demonstrate again for justice, in front of the Barra Funda Forum on the day of the trial, starting at 11am. For them, next week’s popular jury could mark the end of a wait of more than four years for justice.
“The trial will not bring my daughter back, but it is a response to this feeling of impunity that accompanies our family and so many others in Brazil.”, stated Maria Claudia Kohler, Marina’s mother.
Remember the case:
Marina Kohler Harkot, 28, was run over while cycling in the west zone of São Paulo in November 2020, returning home. The driver was drunk and traveling at high speed at the time of the collision, and did not provide assistance.
