Mario Draghi, one year in power

In Italy, former head of the ECB Mario Draghi is completing one year as prime minister. The political parties support him. But for how much longer?

Mario Draghi closes one year in power in Italy. His government was formed exactly 365 days ago and faced a series of difficulties and obstacles with considerable success. The whole Italian press today dedicates articles and analyzes to the action of super Mario.

Regarding the management of the pandemic, the Italian technocratic prime minister decided to entrust the management of the vaccination campaign to a general, Francesco Filiolo. The whole mechanism worked much better and today over 90% of the citizens have received two doses of anti-coronavirus preparations. Former German Chancellor Angela Merkel also referred to the campaign as a “role model” shortly before the end of her term.

Italy, meanwhile, was one of the first countries to implement the “green vaccinated pass”. Mario Draghi worked hard to keep trade as open as possible, even though the super-conservative opposition Brotherhood of Italy continued to accuse him of imposing “useless restrictions”.

The development fund bet

In the economic sector, the country received the largest funding for the Recovery and Sustainability Plan: € 191 billion. So far, Rome has achieved all the goals of the reforms and by 2022 it will have to keep another 55 commitments. Everyone agrees that Draghi’s experience and determination is crucial and that was the main reason why many thought he should stay in the Prime Minister’s Office and not “move” to the Presidency of the Republic.

But there are also some uncertainties: it remains to be seen whether Super Mario will be able to contain the conflicting sentiments of Lega’s secretary Matteo Salvini, whose party is in government. And if all his action is influenced by the great tensions of the Five Star movement, in which it is no longer clear who the real political leader is. At the moment Mario Draghi is clear: in the future he does not intend to lead a political party or alliance. Parliamentary elections will normally take place one year from now. There is still room, if he considers that his data and goals are changing, so that he can reconsider.
