Mario Roggero case, the wife of the jeweler who killed two robbers launches a fundraiser

The purpose is to collect a sum that helps pay the commission to the relatives of the killed robbers. Mariangela Sandrone, the wife of Mario Roggero, the jeweler from Grinzane Cavour (province of Cuneo), together with her daughters, launched a fundraiser on GoFundMe to ask for donations that “could really make a difference and we would be eternally grateful”.

The facts date back to 2021: Mario Roggero is accused of killing two of the three robbers (Giuseppe Mazzarino and Andrea Spinelli) who, in April, attacked his jewelery shop in Grinzane Cavour. The ruling of the Asti court has it sentenced to 17 years in prison for voluntary manslaughteran even more severe sentence than that requested by prosecutor Davide Greco, who had hypothesized a 14-year sentence.

On the day of the robbery, three men wearing hats and surgical masks (in addition to Andrea Spinelli and Giuseppe Mazzarino, also Alessandro Modica) showed up at the jewelry store at 6.30 pm. Behind the counter, there were Roggero's wife and one of his daughters. The three pretended to be interested in an expensive purchase, but when the women opened the jewelery cases, they threatened them with a gun (which later turns out to be a toy weapon). Roggero was in the laboratory behind the shop: alerted by the women's screams, he came out with his gun and shot two of the three robbers to death. The third initially managed to escape, but was tracked down during the night in the hospital of a nearby town, with a wound on his leg.

The images captured by the cameras, however, would have shown that the shooting continued outside the jewelry store, on the street. The Court of Assizes granted Roggero only the general mitigating circumstances and that of having acted after provocation. The families of the victims were awarded a provision of 480 thousand euros.

Mariangela Sandrone explains that the “armed” robbers “had entered our shop, beating us and threatening us with death (They even put the gun to my husband's head, counting down!).” In addition to the provisional payment for the robbers' relatives (which is added to the 300 thousand euros paid to them last year), the sentence ordered Roggero to pay 30 thousand euros for legal costs.

«Since the terrible day of the robbery, suffered 3 years ago, we already had to commitalso taking legal costs into account, the incredible sum of one million two hundred thousand euros», details the woman. «Given the enormous expense paid and to be paid and not having sufficient economic availability, we thought of organizing this new fundraiser: everything we manage to raise will be used for the provision, for compensation, for legal expenses and for any other expense that my husband will be forced to bear.”
