Mariupol officials accuse Russia of bombing civilian evacuation corridor

Officials in the southern Ukrainian city of Mariupol say Russian forces have begun dropping bombs in a region called the “green corridor” designed to evacuate residents of the city.

“Right now, the aerial bombardment of Mariupol is underway,” said Petro Andryushchenko, an adviser to the mayor of Mariupol.

The city representative further stated that the air strikes were being carried out to destroy road infrastructure and completely isolate the city. So far, there are no statements about the Ukrainian claim. On Wednesday, the Russian Defense Ministry said its forces had advanced in several districts around Mariupol.

This Thursday (10) Ukraine opened seven humanitarian corridors for civilians to leave cities besieged by Russian forces, including the city of Mariupol, Sumy, in the northeast of the country, Krasnopillya and Trostyanets.

The Mariupol council said on Thursday that attacks on a maternity hospital on Wednesday, which local authorities blamed on Russians, left casualties. Three people died, the city council said on Thursday.

“Today we know that after the terrorist attack by Russian planes at the children’s hospital in Mariupol there are 17 victims – children, women, doctors – and three have died, including a child, a girl,” the council said.

The total number of victims is still unclear. So far, preliminary reports from authorities said at least 17 people were injured in the attack.

In addition to the maternity ward, a city administration building and a university may have been targets of the same Russian bombing that Ukrainian authorities said hit the maternity ward. The structures are less than 1km from the affected health units.
