Marjorie and Bernie, 102 and 100 years old, break the world record: they are the oldest newlyweds in the world

Marjorie Fiterman and Bernie Littman, 102 and 100 years old respectively, have proven that it is never too late for love, nor for a new beginning. The two, who are they met almost a decade ago in a retirement home in Philadelphiaby getting married they officially became the world’s oldest newlyweds, with a combined age of 202.

Their record has now been certified by Guinness World Recordsand surpassed the previous record held by Brits Doreen and George Kirby, who married in 2015 with a combined age of 194.

According to reports from Jewish Chronicle and from Fox NewsMarjorie and Bernie’s love may have started much earlier. Both were students at the University of Pennsylvania at the same time, although their paths did not cross then. She chose a career in teaching, he became an engineer. Both married young and had very long marriages: Marjorie to Morris, who died in 1999, and Bernie to Bernice, to whom he was married for 65 years. After the loss of their respective spouses, they moved to the same retirement facility in Philadelphia, where they finally met.

As fate would have it the spark struck during a masquerade party organized in the residence. Their first official outing occurred on a special day, the day Bernie’s great-granddaughter was born. Since then, the two have built a deep bond, sharing meals, acting in plays and facing difficulties together, such as the Covid-19 pandemic.

Sarah Sicherman, Bernie’s granddaughter, said the family was delighted to see her grandfather find happiness again with a new partner. “They both love each other’s humor and intellect,” Sicherman said. «They keep each other young».

Although they hadn’t initially planned to get married, Rabbi Adam Wohlberg, who followed them throughout their journey, explained that the couple felt that “being not just close friends, but husband and wife, seemed like the right thing.” During the ceremony, celebrated in the spouses’ residence in May 2024the rabbi preferred to avoid classic advice to newlyweds, recognizing that Marjorie and Bernie had already accumulated a lifetime of wisdom and experience.

Wohlberg also joked that the newlyweds deserved “the cover of the next edition of the University of Pennsylvania’s alumni magazine.”
