The Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte will not seek a fifth term in office and will leave politics after November elections, as he stated today. Rutte submitted on Friday the resignation of his fourth cabinet after failing to agree on tougher immigration policies.
“In recent days there has been much speculation about my motives. The only answer is NetherlandsRutte said in a speech to Parliament ahead of the debate on the collapse of the government. “Yesterday morning I made the decision that I will not be able to be the leader of the VVD again. Once the new cabinet is formed after the elections, I will leave politics.” Rutte’s decision will mark the end of his term as longest serving leader government in Dutch history. He assumed the prime ministership in October 2010, reports APE-MPE.
Rutte, 56, will remain as caretaker prime minister until a new government is formed after the next election, a process that could take months in the Netherlands’ fractured political landscape.
