NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte today called on the European Union not to create barriers that would prevent companies from NATO member states located outside the EU from participating in the European bloc’s defense industrial push. Last year, the Commission published a proposal for a regulation establishing the European Defense Industry Program to support the European defense industry and a framework of measures to ensure the timely availability and supply of defense products. To this end, the Commission has proposed spending €1.5 billion to incentivize member states to buy together from European companies and to encourage industry to increase production capacity. EU member states have not yet agreed on how much of the fund should go to companies in the European bloc.
