Market in Rio sold counterfeit washing powder; 18 tons are seized

Around 18 tons of counterfeit washing powder were seized during an inspection operation carried out at the Megabox supermarket, in the northern zone of Rio de Janeiro. The operation was carried out last Tuesday (30) and the establishment caught committing the irregularity is located on Avenida Brasil, in the Olaria neighborhood.

The operation was carried out after the State Department of Consumer Protection received reports of counterfeiting. After receiving this information, inspectors began tracking Omo brand products.

See the difference between the products:

On the real box, it is possible to see the Unilever hologram with the help of a black light. On the fake box, even with the light, there is no hologram, says the Undersecretary of State for Consumer Protection, Alessandro Carracena.

According to the folder, the fake product is sealed with hot glue, while the real one is closed industrially, leaving no marks. “In the expiration date field of the fake box, just by running your finger over it you will notice that the ink comes off, showing the poor quality of the replica,” adds the secretary. On counterfeit packaging, information about the product's expiration date fades easily

The folder also highlights that, in the original packaging, the opening serration goes all the way to the end of the “pull” information and the opening tab is perforated. In the counterfeit box, it is solid and the serration goes all the way to the end of the box, adds the folder.

In the counterfeit packaging, the closure is done crudely with hot glue

“Considering the large number of fake products on the market today, some brands have created identification devices precisely to guarantee the veracity of what is sold to the consumer,” says the secretariat.

The supermarket was charged and an administrative process will be opened to investigate and apply the appropriate measures. No one was arrested.

A CNN contacted the company Megabox, but received no response.
