Financial markets will close and people will have the day off on Wednesday (24) as Typhoon Gaemi approaches Taiwan, bringing strong winds and torrential rain, with the annual Han Kuang war games scaled back and emergency equipment readied.
Gaemi, the first typhoon of the season to affect Taiwan, is expected to hit the northeast coast early Wednesday evening (24), according to the island’s Central Meteorological Administration.
Currently classified as a medium-strength typhoon by Taiwan, it is likely to cross the Taiwan Strait and make landfall in China’s southeastern Fujian province on Friday.
The capital Taipei and neighboring cities will close schools and give people the day off on Wednesday (24), with financial markets also closed.
“Tomorrow, please stay home,” Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an wrote on his Facebook page. “Gaemi, the first typhoon to make landfall this year, continues to strengthen.”
Meanwhile, TSMC, the world’s largest contract chipmaker, said it expected all its factories to maintain normal production during the typhoon, adding that it had activated routine preparedness procedures.
Some mountainous counties in central and southern Taiwan are expected to see total rainfall of up to 1,800 mm during the typhoon, the meteorological administration said.
The government has put more than 1,000 rubber boats on standby for possible flooding across the island, which will see the storm coincide with annual high tides, and has rushed emergency food, water and communications equipment to remote areas.
