Marriott International and Hilton Worldwide Holdings are suspending the development of new hotels in Russia, joining their voices with other companies reacting to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Their announcements come after the decisions of McDonalds, Starbucks and other emblematic brands that stop operating in the country.
Neither Marriott nor Hilton have suspended their operations in existing hotels.
The Russian government has announced its intention to seize and nationalize some foreign companies leaving the country.
“Our hotels in Russia are owned by third parties and we continue to assess the ability of these hotels to remain open,” Marriott said.
In addition to suspending new hotel deals, hotel giants have closed their corporate offices in Moscow and pledged support for humanitarian efforts.
Marriott stressed that it has allocated funds to help hotel workers affected by the war, and is housing Ukrainian refugees in its hotels in neighboring countries.
Hilton is working with American Express to donate 1 million overnight stays to refugees, according to a March 9 announcement.
The company, which has closed its corporate office in Moscow, will also donate any profits from the operation of its 26 Russian hotels to initiatives to strengthen Ukraine.
Hyatt Hotels also said it would suspend any new investment and decide on the best way to support staff and guests at Russian hotels.
