“Mars One” will represent Brazil at the 2023 Oscars

After winning four awards during the Gramado Film Festival in August, “Mars One” was chosen to represent Brazil in the Oscars 2023 . The long, by the miner Gabriel Martins enters the race for a spot at the award for best international film.

The decision was announced this Monday (5), by the Brazilian Academy of Cinema and Audiovisual Arts.

Last week, the institution had announced the pre-selected feature films, among them were “A Mãe”, by Cristiano Burlan, “A Viagem de Pedro”, by Laís Bodanzky, “Carvão”, by Carolina Markowicz, “Pacificado” , by Paxton Winters, and “Paloma”, by Marcelo Gomes.

“Mars One” shows the character Deivid, played by actor Cícero Lucas, the youngest of a black middle-class family who wants to be an astrophysicist and participate in the “Mars One” mission, which promises to colonize the red planet in 2030.

The life of Deivid and his family is crossed by tensions and political and social events in Brazil in 2018.

“’Mars One’ is not this film that will keep pressing you all to talk about race, politics, affirmation. He’ll get you from another aspect, he’ll get you through emotion, to make you understand how to empathize with the other’s situation”, said director Gabriel Martins, in an interview with CNN during the Gramado Festival.

The feature premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January of this year and, in Gramado, it was shown on August 17, when it received a standing ovation from the audience.
