Marta is spokesperson for the Sustainability: A Necessary Destination campaign, by LATAM

Since 2015, when the United Nations (UN) established the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, LATAM has assumed Sustainability as its biggest challenge and, since then, has sought to promote positive changes for the future. With this, it has been reinforcing the commitments made with Brazil, South America and the world, within the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

To join forces in this necessary fight, for more than a year, the player Marta has been a global ambassador for the UN and the global leader of Diversity and Inclusion at LATAM. Today, Marta is the main spokesperson for the campaign Sustainability: a Necessary Destination which encompasses several initiatives and forms part of the LATAM Group’s Sustainability strategy.

Through bold and transformative measures, LATAM offers all its connectivity expertise and ability to put into practice initiatives that allow nature and people to thrive together.

One of the commitments is to become a company zero waste to landfills by 2027 . To this end, the company works to eliminate single-use plastics by 2023, through the expansion of the onboard recycling program on all domestic flights and the gradual transformation of the VIP lounges, which will offer a 100% sustainable experience, promoting the use of renewable energies, the elimination of single-use plastics and the use of certified ecological materials.

In addition, LATAM supported the transformation of 10 tons of used uniforms in partnership with the Revoada project, an institution specializing in creative reuse. These pieces were transformed and gained a new life in work carried out by women in promoting female empowerment and rescuing self-esteem. In addition, the initiative reduces the use of materials through sustainable fashion.

Another challenging commitment is achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 . This long-term project needs immediate actions, such as the Fridays Pay off . As the name implies, every Friday LATAM offsets the emissions generated on its main routes, through conservation projects for strategic ecosystems in South America, in order to neutralize this carbon emission in the atmosphere. It also protects biodiversity and stimulates local economic development. The entire process is audited and certified to ensure positive impacts are achieved.

The company will compensate 50% of domestic flight emissions by 2030. Along these lines, LATAM has also been actively contributing to the development of the production strategy for the Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) as a commitment to use sustainable fuels in its operations. LATAM’s goal is to use 5% sustainable fuel by 2030privileging the production of South America.

It is important to highlight that LATAM is governed by the CORSIA agreement (Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme in International Aviation) and in 2020 it joined the Science Based Target initiative (SBTi). This means that the company has a science-based emission reduction strategy, which will allow it to fulfill the Paris Agreement commitment not to raise the planet’s temperature by more than 2 degrees centigrade.

One of the Sustainability initiatives, which has been in the air for 11 years, is the LATAM Solidarity Plane , which shortens distances and connects hope with those who need it most. in the area of health, only in Brazil has already transported more than 253 million doses of vaccines against Covid-19, in addition to oxygen cylinders, mechanical ventilators, people undergoing medical treatment and food to combat food insecurity.

It is always ready to take flight in cases of natural disasters, wars, combating human trafficking, supporting refugees and preserving the environment , of fauna and flora among countless cases in which it is necessary to gather expertise, agility, infrastructure and speed, free of charge, to help human, animal and environmental survival.

All this is only possible because LATAM works collaboratively and based on dialogue. This spirit of collaboration unites specialists, academics, NGOs, researchers and organizations, who are in solidarity with a cause, who fight for a greater objective and embark on this necessary destiny, which is to change the course of the planet.
