Martin Parr, the love for sport in one shot

There are sports moments and sports images that mark the existence of each and come to make an epoch. The scream of Tardelli, the embrace of Jacobs and Tamberi in Tokyo, Muhammed Alì in infinite shots. These are those of the champions, but there is also the point of view of those who attend these events and it can be just as exciting and fun.

The Italian Center for Photography hosts Martin Parr. We ❤ Sports, personal exhibition of a myth of contemporary photography, organized with the Lavazza Group, CAMERA and Magnum Photos, on the occasion of the Nitto ATP Finals. The exhibition is open from 28 October 2021 to 13 February 2022.

Martin Parr. We ❤  Sports, the care of Walter Guadagnini with the collaboration of Monica Poggi, retraces the career of the English author, born in 1952, member of Magnum Photos, through about 150 images dedicated to various sporting events, with a thematic focus on the shots taken by Parr at the most important tennis tournaments in recent years. Always an interpreter of the present, he manages to put irony in his portraits of contemporaneity and here he tells all the fun and kitsch of the sports fan.

“I am thrilled to show the photographs on the tennis, which were the result of a stimulating commission received by the Lavazza Group, and at the same time to present a new selection of sports images taken over the course of my long career, ”said the photographer.

The curator, Walter Guadagnini, adds: «Sport is a recurring theme in Parr’s long career: catalyst of the most diverse emotions, it is told by the photographer above all through the uniforms, choreographies and traditions of the fans and spectators, authentic protagonists of this collective ritual ».

«We have been appreciating Martin Parr’s work for years, having collaborated with him since 2008 on a project that talked about Italians’ breakfast. I immediately fell in love with his vision of the world, which wants to photograph life “as it is”. His ironic and personal gaze, his sincere and immediate style, his uncompromising but positive realism are well linked to the idea of collaboration that the Lavazza Group wants to pursue with the world of tennis. Transparency and tradition, sincerity and sharing. Like any great artist, Martin uses the camera to portray the everyday life of the people who walk the streets parallel to great events and great characters. They are intimate and particular stories, beautiful in their uniqueness, lightness and sincerity »explains Francesca Lavazza.
