Martin Scorsese rules out retirement plans: “I won’t say goodbye to cinema”

The director Martin Scorsese 81, denied rumors about his possible retirement . Speculation about the end of the iconic filmmaker’s career increased after the postponement of two of his projects: one about Frank Sinatra and another titled “The Life of Jesus “.

During a press conference at the Cinema Museum in Turin, Italy, last Monday (7), Scorsese reassured fans, stating: “I’m not saying goodbye to cinema at all “. He continued: “I still have more films to make and I hope God gives me the strength to make them.”

The director is in Turin to receive the Stella della Mole award in recognition of his career . Friends like the actor Willem Dafoe (“Poor Creatures”), the Italian director Giuseppe Tornatore (“Cinema Paradiso”) and the production designer Dante Ferretti (“Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street”) were present to honor him.

During the press conference, Scorsese also commented on the state of cinema in relation to new technologies stating that there may be greater integration of them in future viewing experiences.

“Maybe one day we will experience movies through a chip implanted in our heads,” he said. “Imagine’Orlando Furioso ‘ or ‘Hamlet ‘ in virtual reality, where you would see the Prince of Denmark right in front of you, as if he were real. However, regardless of the technology, one thing will always be fundamental: can you communicate something? Can you tell a story? Stories help us understand who we are .”

Future Scorsese projects

Two of Martin Scorsese’s already announced projects were shelved. The first, “The Life of Jesus”, confirmed in January 2024, would be an adaptation of the work of the author of “Silêncio”, Shūsaku Endō .

At the time, the project was scheduled to be filmed “later this year.” Lasting 80 minutes and self-financed, the film would be set mainly in the present day and “would focus on the central teachings of Jesus in a way that explores principles but does not proselytize ”, as reported by Variety.

The biopic about Frank Sinatra had a scheduled start date of November 2024. However, according to Variety, production members were informed in mid-August that the start in November had been canceled without a new date scheduled.

First announced in 2009, the project was supposed to star Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence .

Both are no longer scheduled to debut.
