Marvell Unveils Industry’s First 800G Multimode Electro-Optical Platform for Cloud Data Centers

Marvell recently announced the industry’s first multimode platform capable of 800 Gbps or 8 x 100 Gbps. The platform is said to enable significant speed improvements for short-range optical modules and active optical cable (AOC) solutions in data center infrastructure. Speed boosts are especially needed as AI, machine learning, and supercomputing applications grow and demand ever-increasing throughput. In turn, cloud-optimized solutions help reduce power consumption, latency, and the cost of back-end connections in data centers. The new 800G platform includes the Marvell Spica PAM4 DSP processor, the IN5669TA multi-mode transimpedance amplifier (TIA) and the IN5614DV driver.

Marvell Unveils Industry’s First 800G Multimode Electro-Optical Platform for Cloud Data Centers

Modern data centers are filled with equipment using optical modules, or AOCs, connected by multi-mode optical fiber optimized for short distance communications. This 100Gbps multimode fiber per lane provides cost-effective, low-power, short-range connectivity. To support multi-gigabit transmissions in multi-mode architectures, VCSEL transmitters are often used, which offer the cost advantages of reliability, power efficiency, and ease of deployment.

To increase the interconnect speeds demanded by today’s data center operators, they must upgrade their equipment to minimize the cost and complexity of replacing multimode fiber. With the introduction of the industry’s first 800G multimode platform, data centers can double data rates to achieve 800G speeds using multimode fiber already in use. The new Marvell platform provides an easy plug-and-play option for optical modules and AOCs used in routers and switches, enabling faster and more cost-effective upgrades without overhauling fiber networks.

This Marvell Spica PAM4 DSP is the industry’s first 800Gbps or 8x100Gbps PAM4 DSP to support 800G optical modules in QSFP-DD800 and OSFP form factors. The Marvell IN5614DV is a low power, 56 Gbaud VCSEL line driver for PAM4 optical modules or active optical cables. Finally, the Marvell IN5669TA is a low power 56 Gbaud VCSEL TIA for PAM4 optical modules.

The specified Marvell chipset is already available.
