Mask is no longer mandatory on public transport in São Paulo this Friday

The state government and the city hall of São Paulo released the use of masks face protection in public transport from this Friday (9). Use in subways, buses and trains becomes optional and recommended, according to the government. The easing changes a rule that was in effect since May 2020.

Mandatory use of masks remains in places intended for the provision of health services such as hospitals.

The measure is based on the recommendation of the Management Council of the São Paulo Health Science, Research and Development Department – ​​former Scientific Committee. According to a new assessment made by the council, made up of specialists in public health the current epidemiological scenario of Covid-19 allows the restriction to be relaxed.

The body guides that the population should continue to use masks in public transport, especially among groups considered vulnerable, such as the elderly from 60 years of age and immunosuppressed people.

Public health experts point out that the state has high rates of vaccination coverage, in addition to a significant drop in hospitalizations for the disease. In relation to the numbers of the pandemic recorded earlier this year in the state of São Paulo, there was a drop of more than 90% in hospitalizations and deaths from Covid-19.

The total number of patients with the disease admitted to Intensive Care Units (ICUs) has dropped from 4,091 on February 3 to 363 currently. The moving average of deaths dropped from 288 on February 9 to 27 over the same period.
