Masked thieves broke into Windsor Castle, the official residence of the British royal family located west of London, and stole two vehicles, according to local police.
The incident occurred on October 13, but was first reported on Sunday (17) by the British tabloid The Sun.
Thames Valley Police confirmed the theft in a statement to CNN, this Monday (18).
Officials reported that the criminals entered a building on royal land. The suspects “fled with a black Izuzu pickup truck and a red quad bike,” according to the police statement, adding that no arrests have been made and that an investigation is ongoing.
The Sun reported that two masked men scaled a 6-foot fence to enter the land and then used a stolen vehicle to break through a security gate and flee the scene.
King Charles III and Queen Camilla were not at Windsor Castle at the time of the robbery. Charles III was in Scotland and only returned to London the day after the crime.
The Prince and Princess of Wales, William and Kate Middleton, and the couple’s three children live at Adelaide Cottage, a house that is also on the grounds of Windsor Castle, and it is believed that they were probably there on the day.
Buckingham Palace declared to CNN which never comments on security issues, just like Kensington Palace.
On Christmas Day 2021, a man broke into Windsor Castle armed in an attempt to assassinate Queen Elizabeth II, who was in the royal residence at the time. Jaswant Singh Chail, who was 19 when he tried to kill Elizabeth II, was sentenced to nine years in prison in 2023.
The situation raised doubts about the security of the palace.
