Mass protests in France over Macron’s decision to appoint centre-right Michel Barnier as prime minister

Thousands of people took to the streets of France today to protest French President Emmanuel Macron’s decision to appoint centre-right Michel Barnier as prime minister, with left-wing parties accusing him of rigging the election. Macron on Thursday appointed 73-year-old Barnier, a conservative and former EU Brexit negotiator, as prime minister after two months of searching for the right person to fill the post following July elections that produced a divided parliament in which no party has a clear majority.
