The Central Bank (BC) granted this Monday (5) preliminary regulatory approval to Mastercard for the company to operate payments via WhatsApp, amid the messaging application’s plans to launch a tool with this service in Brazil.
In mid-November, the BC had already granted rival Visa the same authorization, which deals with the alteration of the regulation of payment arrangements classified as purchase, domestic, with the use of post-paid, pre-paid and deposit.
With India, Brazil is one of the countries where the transfer of money between users via WhatsApp is allowed — Visa and Mastercard already have this authorization. The messaging application, owned by Meta, has plans to test an expansion of the tool in the country, in order to allow transactions with credit or debit cards.
The endorsement does not mean permission for purchases via WhatsApp in Brazil, it is just “one of the necessary steps to release the Facebook Pay program in the case of purchase arrangements”, according to a statement from the BC.
Release of the functionality still depends on proof of compliance by those involved with other applicable regulatory requirements, “especially those related to competitive and non-discriminatory aspects in accreditation”, said the BC.
