“Masters of the Air”: cast talks about the importance of portraying World War II

The cast of “Masters of the Air”, a series that arrives on Apple TV+ on Friday (26), defended the importance of making audiovisual productions about the Second World War today.

The plot, based on the book of the same name by Donald L. Miller, was adapted by John Orloff and tells the real story of the 100th Bomb Group of the United States during the attacks on Hitler's Germany.

The production will be released while the world is experiencing two simultaneous wars: Israel's war against the radical Islamic group Hamas; and Russia's war against Ukraine.

For Barry Keoghan, from “Saltburn”, who plays Lieutenant Curtis Rundle Biddick, the series can help narrate the stories of World War II to a group of young people who do not have the exact dimension of what the world experienced at that time.

“The Second World War was a long time ago. There's a younger generation that maybe doesn't understand and like important stories and things and I think being able to like [da série],” stated Keoghan.

“In many ways, immortalizing what these men did and being able to honor them in this series is a really important thing.”

Executive producer Gary Goetzman, who worked alongside Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg on “Benders of the Air,” hopes the series can help viewers learn about the past.

“If we don't show them this, there's no chance they can learn anything from it,” argued Goetzman.

The production, which features Austin Butler in the cast, shows with a magnifying glass the saga of North American soldiers who face the cold, lack of oxygen, high temperatures and the considerable altitudes at which military planes flew in World War II.

“I think it's the most naturally dramatic experience anyone can have,” said Anthony Boyle, who plays the story's narrator, Major Crosby.

“There are no pieces of technology, it's just pure drama. This extra is so high, that you can truly experience the full power of the man as he pushes and tests those limits. It’s natural to tell these great stories.”
