Gary Goetzman, executive producer of “Benders of the Air,” told CNN , which chooses to stay true to the historical record to represent Nazi horrors as accurately as possible in the series. He works alongside Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks, repeating the team that produced “The Pacific” and “Brothers of War”.
“We took everything from a historical reference and then tried to make it as real as possible, catering to the sensibilities of the production director,” said Goetzman. “It’s always, always, the hardest part.”
“Masters of the Air” is a series based on the book of the same name by Donald L. Miller, adapted by John Orloff and tells the true story of the 100th Bomb Group of the United States during the attacks on Hitler's Germany.
The series, which arrives on Apple TV+ on Friday (26), subtly shows the crimes of Hitler's Germany. The persecution of the Jews and the fear it caused in the world appear, trains heading towards concentration camps packed with people and mountains of ash at the door of what appeared to be gas chambers.
The sequence in which people appear packed together like commodities on trains, described by Goetzman as “very moving”, was mostly recorded by contortionists.
The producer argues that productions like this, which have historical accounts as a basis, need to tell the truth.
“You know what people feel about the persecution of the Jews, what they believe happened and what they don't believe. It makes you feel like when you have history on your side, you want people to feel something.”
“Even if it’s people who won’t agree with you, I think you still have to tell the truth.”
The production, which features Austin Butler in the cast, shows with a magnifying glass the saga of North American soldiers who face the cold, lack of oxygen, high temperatures and the considerable altitudes at which military planes flew in World War II.
A CNN , the cast talked about the importance of producing audiovisual content about the Second World War at a time when humanity is experiencing two wars: Israel's war against the radical Islamic group Hamas; and of Russia against Ukraine.
