Matching players with the same PC performance: EA came up with an unusual system

A week ago, on May 3, Electronic Arts officially received a patent for a very interesting player selection technology – thanks to special algorithms, the matchmaking system in competitive video games will take into account not only the player’s skill level, but also the performance of his computer. This was reported by the information publication Segment Next with reference to the patent office. It is worth noting that the company filed a patent application relatively recently (in 2020), and now the unique system is wholly owned by the developer of the Battlefield franchise and Apex Legends battle royale.

The patent description clearly states that the latest technology from Electronic Arts will collect information about the components of the gamer’s computer (probably even implement its own benchmark that will run in the background), and then analyze the data for further use for its own purposes. The test results of the gamer’s computer will be directly involved in the system for selecting players for virtual battles – the developers of the technology are confident that this will significantly improve matchmaking. Probably, this will offset the advantage of gamers with powerful PCs.

True, Electronic Arts does not plan to distribute players solely on the basis of the performance of their computers. The matchmaking technology will still take into account the delay time (ping), the geographic location of the gamer, his gaming skills and many other parameters such as KDA, the number of wins or the chain of defeats. As a result, the publisher plans to optimize the selection of players so that everyone can comfortably fight in more or less equal conditions, but the company has not yet said which video games and when will receive the latest matchmaking.
