Mathilde of Belgium, the elegance of a queen in Greece

From the change of clothes on the plane to the Greek goddess outfit passing through the outfit for the discovery of the ruins, Queen Mathilde did not miss a beat on her three-day visit to Greece started on May 2nd alongside her husband Filippo.
Due to the health emergency, the Belgian royals have not left the palace for state affairs since 2019. The sovereign has therefore responded to the invitation of the President of the Hellenic Republic Katerina Sakellaropoulou with a particularly careful and elegant wardrobe.
Always measured in the mixture of shapes and colors, Mathilde was the protagonist of a little fashion prodigy: in Melsbroek she got on the plane with a jacket in shades of red by Esmeralda Ammounone of her most loved seamstresses, and a pair of blue trousers while at the Athens airport she landed wearing a designer dress Nathan red and fuchsia and a hat that looked like a poppy’s Fabienne Delvigne. A look, among other things, much appreciated by her since it is the same that can be seen in the photo of the family used for the Twitter profile.
With that same outfit she faced the commitments foreseen from the first day, including the meeting with the president and her partner Pavlos Kotsonis and the visit to Smile of the Childa charity that takes care of the well-being of children living in fragile contexts.

For the evening banquet the indication for the dress code was cocktail dress/dark suit and not black tie. Translation: Philip wore a suit and not a tuxedo while no tiara on his head for Mathilde. To respect the diplomacy of royal fashion, the queen chose a signed creation Costarellos. Precious and delicate, the dress is made with French tulle and embroidered lace. The transparencies with floral applications make the whole particularly ethereal and fabulous, thanks to the cape that covers the shoulders and the very light train.

Christos Costarellos was born in Germany but studied fashion design in Greece and then worked as a theater costume designer in London. The designer embarked on a solo adventure in 1998 becoming one of the top names in Athens Fashion Week. He is clearly inspired by ancient Greece and is very well known in the sector bridal. If the name tells you something there is a reason: Costarellos was the signature of the hired dress in which Carrie Symonds married Boris Johnson.

She may not have packed one of her tiaras but Mathilde hasn’t given up on royal jewels anyway. In the bun she has pinned Queen Fabiola’s diamond brooch, wife of Baldovino and therefore aunt of Filippo. A pair of fringed diamond earrings, spotted on the 80th birthday of King Harald of Norway, shone instead.

For the second day, a first stop was planned at the Adama Center, an organization that offers support to refugee people, and then moved on to archeology (one of the reasons why the state visit was organized was to see the work of archaeologists Belgians) with a passage first to Cape Sounion and then to the site of Thorikos.

Although the clothing was not suitable for the hike, the queen in her dress with geometric prints in shades of green and the straw hat of the same milliner from the day before, did not do a plissé. With the Indiana Jones moment filed, the royals attended the concert organized in honor of President Sakellaropoulou with the Belgian National Orchestra at the Acropolis museum in Athens. With a magenta tunic attributed to Dries Van Noten embellished with crystal and sequin decorations, she walked among the statues before enjoying the music. Impeccable as always, among the classics, classic with panache.

On the third day Mathilde again paid tribute to the land she was hosting her with another outfit designed by Costarellos. It was a white wool coat with a flower embroidered on one side that Her Majesty paired with a pair of wide leg trousers with the same design. The combination of accessories, blouse and shoes of the same pink as the flower, was simply perfect despite the redundancy of the embroidery. When you wear clothes with such grace, nothing turns out to be inconvenient.
