Mathilde of Belgium, with Pope Francis exploits her “white privilege”

Mathilde of Belgium and that privilege he enjoys. We are not talking about tiaras, jewels of inestimable value or the possibility of having stylists from all over the world at her feet but about the possibility of being able to dress in white in the presence of the pontiff. The Queen in the Vatican during a private audience with Pope francesco shows off an outfit that couldn’t be whiter, taking advantage of that concession that only she and very few other royals have: the so-called privilege of white.

Known and appreciated for her always appropriate style, Mathilde respects tradition with a dress code by the manual. The queen wears a knee-length white dress with a raised collar, a neckline created by the crossing of the two flaps of fabric and a belt embellished with a bow. To characterize her, she wore a veil, a truly old-fashioned accessory.

She is perhaps the last ruler to have an old-fashioned approach to fashion without having an old-fashioned look. Bright colors, showy flowers and selected fashion houses are the strong points of her wardrobe that we X-ray her on her birthday

The essential and traditional look is illuminated by some very important jewels full of meaning for the sovereign: the earrings she wore on her wedding day with Philippe of Belgium celebrated in Brussels on 4 December 1999. The design of the jewellery, diamond bows with pearl, recalls the decorative element of the belt creating a pendant refined and discreet.

It is not the first visit to the Vatican for Mathilde from Belgium. The previous one dates back to 2015 and was marred by a knee problem. However, the brace and crutches did not compromise the elegance of the impeccable royal and she chose a very simple coat and dress, obviously white, to match the veil on her head.

With Bergoglio the rules, as you might imagine, are not that stringent. More queens hold onto this “privilege”, anchored as they are to protocol. In the summer of 2022, however, it made headlines the look of the Catholic convert Charlène of Monaco, a royal included in the “privileged” list. If on previous occasions the princess had observed the rule, last year she opted for an almost penitent black ensemble.

This is why Charlène of Monaco gave up her privilege (she didn’t go blank in the Vatican)

The Monegasque royal is one of seven women in the world who can go to an audience with the Pope, enjoying an ancient privilege granted to Catholic sovereigns. Yet, unlike other times, this time she chose a black look just like all the other queens who don’t have the privilege of white. Here’s what the dress code is for the Vatican

The list of royals who enjoy the **privilege du blanc **it’s really limited. In addition to the aforementioned Charlène of Monaco and Mathilde of Belgium, the Pope can be received by the Pope dressed in white. also queen emerita Paola of Belgium (Matilde’s mother-in-law), Letizia of Spain and his mother-in-law Queen Emerita Sofiathe Grand Duchess of Luxembourg Maria Theresa And the Duchess of Savoyto the century Marina Doria, wife of Vittorio Emanuele. An exclusive club, no doubt about it.
