Lana and Lilly Wachowski, the filmmakers behind the “Matrix” film series, are auctioning off nearly 200 props and cinematic items from their archives.
It wasn’t easy to sort out some of the treasures, Lilly Wachoswki said, including original pieces of some of the sisters’ most iconic moments. But the proceeds from the auction are going to organizations that defend and protect transgender youth, a cause close to the sisters’ hearts.
Lilly Wachowski tweeted that she and Lana had done a “spring cleaning” when they “happily decided to pass on some of the best treasures we’ve collected over the years”!
Fans of the Wachowskis have dozens of limited-edition, one-of-a-kind items to sift through, such as original artwork, mockups of famous plays, and a few items from the directors’ tables. Objects also include finds from the Netflix series “Sense8” and the films “Jupiter Ascending” (2015) and “Speed Racer” (2008), with bids starting at $30 for some items.
The sale of everything from the sisters’ MTV Movie Awards for “The Matrix” to the iconic ray rifle from the first film in the series will support the Protect and Defend Trans Youth Fund, presented by Ariana Grande last month. . Donations collected by the fund will be distributed among various organizations serving trans people, including the Black Trans Advocacy Coalition and Transanta.
Both the Wachowski sisters are trans and have criticized anti-transgender legislation introduced across the US.
Lilly Wachowski, who directed and wrote the first three “Matrix” films with Lana, said in 2020 that the series is an allegory for gender transition. The story is “all about the desire for transformation” from the perspective of Neo, played by Keanu Reeves. Both sisters publicly came out as trans years after the release of the third “Matrix” movie.
Her series “Sense8” took a more open approach to trans storytelling from the perspective of the character Nomi, played by trans actress Jamie Clayton.
Wachowski fans can access the auction online starting May 12th.
