No more than two years ago, young Matt Richards believed he could not continue training when the pandemic hit the UK. So, with motivation and a lot of love for discipline, Richards decided to buy a garden pool and train in the backyard of his house.
Months later, Richards is now one of the Olympians who managed to win the gold medal for the UK swimming committee in the freestyle category. The 18-year-old and Calum Jarvis are the first Welsh to win an Olympics since 1912.
Incredibly, these are the first Olympic Games in which Richards participates and his teamwork with Duncan Scott, James Guy and Tom Dean, within the 200-meter relays, led him to establish himself as an Olympic athlete.

Matt was born in Worcester, although he managed to register as a Welsh swimmer by his father’s nationality. For his part, Jarvis, 29 years old and born in Rhondda Cynon Taf, Wales, managed to close the relay race with a flourish, receiving his first Olympic medal.
