Matteo Messina Denaro case, Rosa Leone speaks, former partner of Andrea Bonafede: “I left him as soon as I learned”

A bolt from the blue. It was more or less this for Rosa Leone, Andrea Bonafede’s partner of 11 years, to discover that her man had lent her name to Matthew Messima Denaro, the Cosa Nostra boss arrested in Palermo on Monday 16 January with his man’s identity card in his pocket. “A bomb went off in my house”the woman said in an interview with Corriere della Seraexplaining that she is no longer linked to him. “I left him, I’m done with him, I don’t want to know anything about it anymore. I left as soon as I knew. I hadn’t noticed anything, Andrea hid everything from me ».

While admitting that she still loves Andrea Bonafede, the man she trusted blindly until not too long ago, Rosa Leone said she tried to see clearly once the news went around the world. “After being interrogated for hours he came to the house, we talked. And he begged me, he said to me: “Excuse me Rosa but what was I supposed to do? Iddu came to me and asked for my documents…”. Andrea told me that the two of them have known each other since they were boys. Basically I understand it, I put myself in his shoes: how could he say no to Matteo Messina Denaro? I think I would have done that too if that had happened to me. Out of fear, I too would have given my identity card to a boss of that caliber».

Despite this, Leone says he does not go back while defining Andrea Bonafede “a good man, kind to everyone, a hard worker”: «I don’t want to see him anymore, I’m disappointed, angry. He hid everything from me.” Furthermore, it seems that Rosa was also unaware that Andrea Bonafede had bought a house in her name but with Matteo Messina Denaro’s money: «He never said anything to me. So now I’m also very worried. The investigators also confiscated my cell phone. Now I expect interrogations, the siege of journalists, a life of hell. I really can’t. I don’t sleep anymore at night.” The couple – who were 15 years apart – had met at the Aquasplash in Tre Fontane, a facility where Leone was the administrator and Bonafede the handyman, but now it seems that there is nothing left for them to do. «We would have lived our old age together…». Now, nothing more.
