Matteo Messina Denaro: “Please treat me with the best medicines”

Matteo Messina Denaro, the after-effects (some intestinal problems) of the first maintenance chemo in maximum security prison in L’Aquilaunder the 41 bis regime, is concerned with being treated in the best possible way.

«I didn’t receive a cultural education but I’ve read hundreds of books, so I’m knowledgeable about cures, please be able to be treated with better drugs and therapies»: he would often repeat this, in a calm tone, to the doctors who are taking care of his health. The mafia boss recommended himself: “I have not received a cultural education but I have read hundreds of books, so I am informed about treatments, please be able to be treated with better drugs and therapies”, and he asked to be able to access special therapies “which are only available in Israel”.

The doctors reassured him, explaining that they are following cutting-edge procedures, just as international protocols require. Oncologists plan to organize the second chemotherapy session within the next few weeks.

Doctors and prison staff are the only people with whom Matteo Messina Denaro is allowed to speak, since the 41 bis regime is foreseen for him (he must also serve three years of daytime isolation, therefore he will not be able to meet other prisoners) : she confessed to them that all her worries concern the colon cancer she suffers from. To the policemen, the former fugitive explained: «I don’t create problems, tell me what to do». And she wanted to clarify: “I’m not the person who is described” by television. He claims that he has “never killed women or children”, despite being definitively convicted of having participated in the kidnapping and murder of little Giuseppe Di Matteo, and also of having strangled Antonella Bonomo, a young pregnant woman.
