The one where Matthew Perry tries to make amends with Keanu Reeves.
The “Friends” star appeared at the LA Times Festival of Books on Saturday and, during a panel, told the audience that he plans to remove Reeves’ name from future editions of his 2022 memoir “Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing”.
The work is a candid account of Perry’s struggle with substance abuse and addiction. But the actor faced backlash for references to Reeves that some found offensive, including a snippet about the death of his friend River Phoenix — brother of Joker star Joaquin Phoenix — in 1993.
“River was a beautiful man, inside and out — too beautiful for this world, that’s it. Seems like it’s always the really talented guys who fall,” Perry wrote in the book. “Why do original thinkers like River Phoenix and Heath Ledger die but Keanu Reeves still walks among us?”
Perry later apologized for the comment, saying in an October 2022 statement to People that he is “a huge fan” of Reeves and that he had chosen a “random name” in the book. “My apologies. I should have used my own name,” he added in the statement.
This Saturday, Perry addressed the mention of Reeves once again, now telling the audience, “I said a stupid thing. It was a bad thing to do,” according to the LA Times.
“I pulled his name because I live down the street,” Perry said during the panel, noting that “any future version of the book will not be named after him.”
While Perry has previously apologized to Reeves, he also mentioned at the festival that he has yet to personally apologize to the “Matrix” star.
“If I find the guy, I’ll apologize. It was just stupid,” concluded Perry.
