Russia is ready for the possibility of Europe stopping buying Russian energy resources, the president of the Federation Council, upper body of the Russian parliament, Valentina Matvienko, stressed on Tuesday, according to the Russian agency TASS.
Matvienko added that if Europe decides to stop buying Russian hydrocarbons, Moscow could be reoriented to other markets, including Asia.
Russia has demanded that “unfriendly” countries soon start paying for gas exclusively in rubles, in response to Western sanctions over Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The seven traditional industrialized nations in the G7, however, said Monday they were rejecting Moscow’s demand.
As far as the European Union is concerned, no common position was reached at the last “27” Summit.
