The samba schools returned to parade two years after the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic. In both São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, social and political issues dominated the themes chosen for the presentations.
To CNN Specialist in Rights and Inclusion, Maurício Pestana, “it is vitally important for a party like Canarval to address these issues”. “The fight against prejudice, including religious prejudice, which is very strong in Brazil, caught my attention, as did the racial issue,” said Pestana.
After two years marked by the pandemic, the CNN Specialist said he expected more health-related topics, but was positively surprised. “Actually, racial and political issues were the strong point of this Carnival. Very good to see that Brazilian society is mobilized against this evil”, he evaluated.
Finally, Pestana states that these issues must continue to be debated by Brazilian society. “Any form of expression in the fight against racism and these prejudices is very important. It’s a moment when you see blacks and whites echoing a single cry. It would be very important that this not happen not only at Carnival”.
