Next Tuesday (24), the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mauro Vieira, will preside over an open High-Level debate of the Security Council dedicated to the situation in the Middle East. The meeting will discuss issues such as seeking a ceasefire and opening humanitarian corridors.
Representing President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), the minister participated in the Cairo Peace Summit, this Saturday (21), called by the Egyptian government to discuss the evolution of the conflict and the perspectives of the Israeli-Palestinian issue.
Mauro Vieira highlighted the impact of the Security Council’s inaction on the war between Israel and the radical Islamic group Hamas.
During his participation, he welcomed Egypt’s efforts for peace, in addition to expressing grave concern about the deterioration of the humanitarian situation in Gaza, the escalation of hostilities and the thousands of victims.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, “in the exercise of the Presidency of the UN Security Council, Brazil will continue to act incessantly to prevent the escalation of the conflict, and will seek to build agreements that protect the civilian population, alleviate the dramatic humanitarian situation and guarantee security of humanitarian aid agents.”
