Maxi Jazz, lead singer of electronic music group Faithless, dies aged 65

Maxi Jazz, the British musician best known as the lead singer of electronic music group Faithless, has died, according to the band.

The band announced Jazz’s death in a Facebook post this Saturday (24). The singer, born Maxwell Fraser, was 65 years old. He died peacefully in his sleep on Friday night, according to Faithless’ Twitter.

“We are heartbroken to say that Maxi Jazz died last night,” the band wrote on their verified Facebook account. “He was a man who changed our lives in so many ways. He gave the proper meaning and message to our music.”

“He was also an incredible human being, with time for everyone and a wisdom as deep as it was accessible,” the post continues. “It was an honor and of course a real pleasure to work with him.”

“He was a brilliant lyricist, a DJ, a Buddhist, a magnificent stage presence, car lover, endless talker, wonderful person, moral compass and genius.”

Jazz was a lifelong fan of British football club Crystal Palace and even became an associate director of the team in 2012, according to a club statement.

To honor his life, the team will go out to a song by Faithless on Boxing Day on Monday (26), according to the statement.

Jazz formed Faithless with groupmates Jamie Catto, Rollo and Sister Bliss in 1995.

The band earned acclaim for iconic songs like the ’90s dance anthem “Insomnia” and “God is a DJ.” They have also performed at Britain’s Glastonbury Festival four times, according to the Victoria and Albert Museum.

Musicians and fans paid tribute to the artist after his death. “Rest in Poetry,” London Elektricity, drum and bass DJ and co-founder of Hospital Records, wrote on Instagram on Saturday, alongside an image of Jazz.

British singer Rowetta and Dutch DJ Armin van Buuren also posted tributes to the musician.

“His voice and music will live forever,” British DJ duo CamelPhat wrote on Twitter. “From the nightclub to the festival, you’ve brought a whole new dynamic to the dance floor. A great inspiration to all of us.”
