“No, I’m your father.” What did she think when she read this sentence? It is not necessary for her to have thought of a specific character, but it is almost certain that her first thought was in Star Wars .
If you are one of the people who immediately thought of Darth Vader and then in Star Wars , you are sure to be a fan of “star wars”, or simply a connoisseur of pop culture. It does not matter. For all of them, this Wednesday (4th) is a very special date: Star Wars (or Star Wars Dayas commented on social media).
This date has gained popularity over the years, to the point that there are events in various parts of the world to celebrate the universe created by George Lucas.
How was Star Wars Day born?
There was no better day for the party than the 4th of May, as the slogan of the celebration is a play on words that unites both the date and one of the classic Star Wars phrases:
- “May the force be with you” (iconic phrase of the jedi since the first film of the saga, called “Star Wars VI: A New Hope “, from 1977: in Portuguese, it means “may the force be with you”);
- “May the fourth be with you” (which in Portuguese means “may the 4th of May be with you).
How did these phrases come together to arrive at what is now the Star Wars Day? In fact, the story has some gaps (as all legends have), but it’s possible to say that it all started in the United Kingdom.
According to the Lucasfilm-recognized origin story of the date, the phrase was first used on May 4, 1979, the day Margaret Thatcher took office as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.
Apparently, the Conservative Party ran an advertisement in the London Evening News that read: “May the Fourth be With You, Maggie. Congratulations” (“May the 4th be with you, Maggie. Congratulations”.
Events around the world
Much later, the date gained traction in the age of social media, where it became a major event each year, and finally expanded into real life with events in Toronto. Now, there are events that celebrate the day every year.
There are promotions on the internet and in stores that sell Star Wars products and games, food from the saga in abundance and events where fans dress up, or simply enjoy their favorite movie franchise.
New series
On May 27, it debuts on Disney’s streaming service, the Disney + a new series of the universe Star Wars. The attraction will tell the story of one of the franchise’s most beloved characters, the jedi Obi Wan Kenobi .
“Obi Wan Kenobi” will have weekly episodes.
Lucasfilm, the producer of the Star Wars films, was purchased by the conglomerate in 2012, and has since released five films featuring the iconic characters.
