Mayor of Angra asks for shutdown of plants; state says there is no commitment

the mayor of Angra dos ReisFernando Jordão (MDB), said in a video posted on social media this Sunday (3) that he asked for the shutdown of the nuclear power plants in cove 1 and cove 2 after the heavy rains that hit Rio de Janeiro.

The publication states that, due to rains and landslides, the Rio-Santos highway has a series of barriers, which has left the municipality stranded. “If necessary, we will not be able to put the emergency plan into practice while the main access roads to the municipality are closed”.

According to the mayor, the request will be made to Eletronuclear, the state-owned company responsible for managing the nuclear power plants Brazilians.

Jordão also said that he contacted the current Minister of Infrastructure, Marcelo Sampaio, to ask the current company responsible for the highway to eliminate the barriers.

In a note, Eletronuclear stated that the External Emergency Plan (PEE) for the Angra dos Reis nuclear power plant was not compromised with road barriers.

“Firstly, it is necessary to explain that, if necessary, the evacuation of company workers and the population would be carried out by the BR-101 RJ Sul, both towards Angra dos Reis and Paraty. It turns out that the obstructions found on this road are outside the Emergency Planning Zones (ZPE) provided for in the PEE,” the note says.

According to the state-owned company, “the National Nuclear Energy Commission (Cnen) – regulatory and supervisory body of the Brazilian nuclear sector – issued a note stating that ‘despite the situation resulting from the meteorological conditions in the region of Angra dos Reis, up to the present moment there has been no access roads around the plant are compromised, which could impact the execution of the Emergency Plan”.

Eletronuclear highlighted that the Angra 1 and Angra 2 plants are operating normally and at full capacity, generating energy for the National Interconnected System (SIN).

The Directorate of Radioprotection and Nuclear Safety of the National Nuclear Energy Commission (CNEN) stated that, if there is any situation that makes the execution of the PEE unfeasible, it would be appropriate to consider shutting down the plants.

“However, despite the situation resulting from the weather conditions in the Angra dos Reis region, so far there is no compromise on the access roads around the Central, which could impact the execution of the Emergency Plan”, said CNEN, which continues monitoring the situation.

According to the National Civil Defense, on Sunday afternoon, there are 12 interdiction points on the BR-101, in the town of Rio de Janeiro, ten of them due to landslides on the highways. On the part of the highway that is in the state of São Paulo, there are 11 interdiction points.
