A year after the tragedy that hit Rio Grande do Sul, the city of Canoas still faces significant challenges in recovery. In an interview with CNN Brasil, Mayor Airton Souza detailed the current situation of the municipality.
Urban cleaning remains a recurring problem. Although an initial cleaning was performed shortly after the flood, the residents’ gradual return to their homes has generated new built of rubble. “We often have garbage accumulations, because not all families have managed to return at the same time to their homes,” Souza explained.
The mayor, who was also affected by the flood with his house flooded by 1.90 meters of water, reported that streets such as Viamão, in Matias Velho neighborhood, undergo repeated cleaning cycles as residents return and renovate.
Committed infrastructure
In addition to cleaning, the city faces infrastructure problems. The siltation of the rainwater network has caused flooding in previously affected areas. “Our wolf mouths, since I took over in January, we have cleaned approximately one thousand in the flood region, but the pipe was compromised,” said the mayor.
The situation is aggravated by the fact that 20 days of standing water resulted in accumulated dirt in the pipes, compromising the city’s drainage system. As a result, more intense rainfall now causes flooding in previously non -problematic places.
Psychological and health impact
The flood trauma still psychologically affects the population. The mayor himself admitted to feel apprehension when time closes, reflecting a feeling shared by the residents. “This feeling of fear accompanies me too, sometimes it closes time we get that concern,” shared Souza.
As for public health issues arising from dirty water contamination and waste during the flood, the mayor did not provide specific details, but the concern with the long -term consequences for the population’s health remains evident.
