Miami Mayor Francis Suarez said most of the bitcoins mined outside the US are mined with dirty energy and urged miners to relocate to Miami.
During the Unconfirmed podcast, Suarez emphasized that only a small fraction of BTC is mined in the United States, and for national security purposes, it is necessary to increase the amount of bitcoins mined in the country. In addition, the US could use cleaner energy to mine the first cryptocurrency.
“The problem is that 90% of bitcoins are mined outside the United States. And these countries are using dirty energy. Therefore, mining can be viewed as a rather “dirty” industry. However, we have nuclear power – it is very clean and practically unlimited in reserves of energy, ”- said the Mayor of Miami.
Earlier Suarez said that he plans to make Miami “the world capital of cryptocurrencies.” In addition, the city authorities are considering the possibility of paying salaries in bitcoins. During the podcast, Suarez also highlighted that the city could become a hub for mining companies:
“It will be a blessing for the cryptocurrency community if we mine more bitcoins in the US, as we have clean energy, and in the future we can use solar or other sources of energy. We need to make bitcoin mining more efficient. ”
Recall that China is the leader in bitcoin mining, with a significant part of BTC being mined using energy supplied by hydroelectric power plants in the Sichuan province. True, the excess energy is formed only during the rainy season.
