Eight civilians were killed amid an evacuation in Irpin – a district west of the capital Kiev, which suffered heavy shelling on Sunday (6) – Irpin mayor Oleksandr Markushyn said in a statement on Telegram on Sunday.
Markushyn said the Russians opened fire during an evacuation that took place via a bridge. “A family died,” he said, “in front of me, two small children and two adults died.”
Video of the scene showed civilians moving through the checkpoint before an explosion occurred at a crossroads, which appeared to have been caused by a shell or mortar.
“Irpin is at war, Irpin has not surrendered,” said Markushyn. “Part of Irpin has indeed been captured by Russian invaders, but part of Irpin is fighting and not surrendering.”
Markushyn said another evacuation would begin on Monday.
